With all those devices, you probably also like to share data and files among them. Well, normally that works fine as most of the time the DNS name of the device is used. However, there are quite a few instances where you end up using the IP address to access a device and if that IP address changes, then you have to reconfigure the device.
For example, I have a printer that also scans and will save the file directly to a computer. However, it uses the IP address instead of the name of the machine.
Every time the machine reboots, it gets a new IP address and I have to type that new IP into the printer. What a pain! This saves you from having to configure 20 devices individually and allows you to manage all the static IP addresses from one central location. Most modern routers have some sort of IP address reservation page or configuration option that you just have to find, usually under the Local Area Network or LAN section.
If you already know it, then you can skip this section. To figure out your router IP, you can simply look up the default gateway on your computer. Windows 8 — Go to Start screen, right-click, choose All apps, then scroll right and click on Command Prompt.
Make sure you are looking at the correct network adapter. If you are using wireless, it should say Wireless adapter. The IP address you want is the one listed under Default Gateway. This will load the web interface for your wireless router. Note that you will probably have to enter the router username and password in order to gain access. If you never changed it, then you can check out a site called routerpasswords.
If you have the original packaging, it should be on there too. To give a device a fixed IP address, just find it in the list and then click on the Address Assignment drop down.
By default, it is set to Private from pool:IPRange. From the drop down, you can choose a fixed IP address. Once you log in, you have to click on Advanced at the top or side. Go ahead and click on that. All of them should be Dynamic leases by default. To change this, you need to click on the Edit button next to the lease you want to make static. Finally, check the Static Lease Type box and click Apply. For my Netgear router, the process was a little different.
First, once you logged in, you have to go to Attached Devices to see all the connected devices and their MAC addresses.
Click the Add button under Address Reservation and then either choose from the radio buttons at the top or manually type in info yourself. This is a much easier way to assign static or fixed IP addresses to devices on your network rather than manually configuring it on the device itself.

The firewall does this by blocking all incoming and outgoing connections unless specified otherwise. In order to open some of these connections you need to create a port forward. Port forwarding is not a difficult process if you follow our guide. We will walk you through each of the steps in order, including:. While these steps might seem difficult at first, we will walk you through each step for your Arris DGA router. We think that forwarding a port should be easy. That's why we created Network Utilities.
Our software does everything that you need to forward a port. Get Started Now! It is important to setup a static ip address in the device that you are forwarding a port to. This ensures that your ports will remain open even after your device reboots.
Now we are going to login to your Arris DGA router. Your router has a web interface, so you login to it using your web browser. It usually does not matter which browser you choose to use. Open up your web browser and find the address bar. It should look something like this:. In the picture above the address bar has Your router's IP address can also be refered to as your computer's default gateway or the router's GUI address. If you have changed the router's IP address in the past then enter that IP address in the address bar.
If you don't remember what you changed it to or the above default address did not work, you need to find out what you changed it to. After entering the IP address of your router you can simply press enter. You are shown a page or box like this:. Enter your username and password, and then click the Login button to log in to your Arris DGA router.
This is a common place to get stuck. Here are a few things you can try if you find yourself here:. Now we need to find the port forwarding section in your Arris DGA router. Here's how you do it. Starting from the first page in your router:. You are now on the correct page to make a port forward entry called a virtual server in this router. Make up a name to put in the Description box. The name does not have any effect on the functionality of the forward, it's simply there so you can know why it was created.
If you are forwarding a range of ports, enter the lowest number of that range into the left hand Inbound Port and Local Port boxes. Then enter the highest number of that range into the right hand Inbound Port and Local Port boxes. If you are forwarding a single port, enter that port number into both of the Inbound Port and both of the Local Port boxes. If you are forwarding ports so you can run a program on a device other than your computer then you can enter your device's IP address into that box.
How do you tell if your port forward went through as it was suppose to. You need to test it. There are a lot of different port checkers on the Internet. Most use the application you are forwarding the ports for to check if your ports are open.I tried changing port numbers to something higher and it's still blocked and it's going to cause issues with my site-to-site VPN that I'm setting up. Anyone have any luck getting static IP working with full unrestricted ports? It seems to be blocking it from the Arris device and I tried turning every single option of there but it still being blocked.
You need to get the Arris in "bridge" mode. IP Passthrough is what I think it's called on the Arris devices. On my customers with U-Verse, I just set it to Passthrough mode and configure my router behind it the way I want - nothing has ever been blocked. What are you trying to connect to via SSH? Is your router configured to accept inbound traffic on those ports and forward them to the destination device? I use it to manage the router. I definitely know it's a problem with this Arris modem.
I even asked the tech that came out to install it and he has no idea how to get this going, which is a bit stupid since they install it, he says they the company doesn't train them on how to set up the statics?
